Dance-Movement Therapy Training Institutions in Australia

IDTIA: International Dance Therapy Institute of Australia, Melbourne

The Certificate is a one year course of experiential, theoretical and practicum training, conducted by the International Dance Therapy Institute of Australia Inc, which has trained dance therapists since 1989. It comprises 180 hours of direct training hours, supplemented by the dyad movement observation project and the dance therapy practice project, 20 hours each. The six courses, in module structure of 6 weekend intensive training and evening tutorials include: Dance movement processes, History of dance therapy as a healing art, Creative processes and group processes, Human development related to movement studies, Theoretical frameworks and healing modalities, Therapeutic application. There is provision for interstate students.

Completion of the Certificate can lead on to the Institute Diploma in Dance Therapy. Attendance at an Introduction to Dance Therapy workshop is expected for selection and orientation. The Institute also offers courses in Advanced training in Dance Therapy.

Dance Therapy at RMIT University, Melbourne has been discontinued and will not run beyond 2006.

Current RMIT staff are investigating other possible university hosts for the course.

Wesley Institute, Sydney

Wesley Institute offers accredited training in dance movement therapy and counselling in the Master of Counselling with a DMT specialisation.  The Master of Counselling is a two year full-time course which may be taken over up to five years part-time. 
The DMT specialisation includes examination of movement theory and analysis, theory and practice in the works of Laban, Bartenieff and Kestenberg; models of improvisation for dance movement therapy based on psychotherapeutic models and the works of dance movement therapy pioneers; psychological studies in relevant theories, models and practices for dance movement therapy; and working with different client groups.  Students complete professional development workshops, disabilities and psychiatric practicums, and 200 hours of clinical practice in DMT. 
The requirement for entry to the program is an undergraduate degree or ten years of related work experience and five years’ dance experience (not necessarily formal dance training).
